Is the Rec Center off the Table?

Post by Michael Deneen »

As you may recall, months ago the Observer exposed the Summers plan to demolish the Hospital in order to build a recreation center. He even went to the Board of Education in 2014 asking them to support a tax increase for the project.

Here are two links to evidence of this plan.

After word leaked, City Hall went into damage control.
The public HATED this idea, and Summers' gang went to great lengths to downplay it.

They started floating half-baked ideas like a "boutique hotel".
Then they had Dru Siley's "Big Dreamers Seminar" at UA.

However, I haven't heard anything lately about the mayor's "plan" for those 5 acres.

If re-elected, will he bring back the Rec Center idea?
Why should we believe he wouldn't?

I am guessing that at this point they have nothing but a recreation center.

If they promised 2 acres to the Clinic, promised to preserve the building on Detroit and promised to preserve the old Hospital they might have enough space left for a parking lot.

The bigger question is why the Clinic, County government, the Cuyahoga County Republican AND Democrat party and big money groups think it is so important to re elect Summers.

There is more here than meets the eye. I think they are terrified about the lawsuit and the discovery process.

Is this corruption scandal bigger than Dimora?

Fairview Park's Rec Center cost $92 million. As the Huron Report pointed out, there is not enough money for anything significant. Nothing that would make up the tax loss.

People think a rec center sounds great - until they learn how much it will cost them.

Tax INCREASE to build, tax INCREASES to maintain, and monthly user fees. They aren't free.

Rec center are crippling cities. Brooklyn LOST A MILLION DOLLARS last year on theirs.

A rec center COSTS money and keeps costing $$$.

The actual projection was $211 per average house per year, and $70 a month membership fee.

Summers operative Todd Heckler was a vocal advocate for the Rec Center before public opinion seemingly killed the idea.

However, Todd remains an avid member of Team Summers....which makes me wonder if the idea is still alive within City Hall's "inner circle".
