Transfats - NYC and Lakewood

Post by Mark Crnolatas »

What is good enough for NYC, is good enough for Lakewood. Here's a site about transfats, and the push to eliminate them in all of New York City.
Transfats are the leading cause of heart disease. The people in NY have no qualms about asking a restaurant if they use hydrogenated oils (transfats) ie: hydrogentated soybean oil in their food.

I began to ask the same question of the pizza places, and so far, have not found one that uses only olive oil, which is good for us and reduces "bad cholestrol" (LDL). The few I talked to, use a blend of olive oil and "vegetable oil". When asked for more details, I found 2 that used "soybean oil" along with olive oil. When asked if it was hydrogenated, no one seemed to know.

Here's a link to some interesting reading: First to find out about transfats,
http://www.bantransfats.com

Then: http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/cardio ... sfat.shtml

I'm guilty of eating some foods with them, but I'm trying to get me and my family to avoid them when possible.

Mark….

If you wanna avoid transfats, refined sugar, preservatives, whatever, you only have one choice, the same choice I made almost four years ago.

Only eat what you cook yourself. And only buy fresh ingredients from places you trust. There’s no other way. No municipality is gonna protect you. Forget about restaurants. You will never get the straight poop…..

It takes extra time especially at first but after a while you get into a bit of a groove. Your menu will be very limited especially if you are as lousy of a cook as I am.

But there is not a stick of transfat in my diet. Not one milligram.

PS A couple things to avoid if you wanna totally eliminate transfats. Microwave popcorn. Non dairy coffee creamer. Both should be illegal.

Good luck.

Somthing isn't it? A city will legistlate banning of smoking, making it illegal to light up inside certain buildings and in or at certain areas, but not do anything regarding transfats, which are more a threat. Just one of those things that make you go hmmmm.

I think the rationale for smoking bans is that innocent non-smokers can be subjected to the unhealthy effects of second-hand smoke.

I don't see much possibility of second-hand trans fat ingestion.

If we're going to get into the business of healthy living by government fiat, why not have exercise police who knock on your door at 7 a.m. to make sure you're ready for your 5-mile run?

Personal freedom still counts for something, woudn't it? I doubt if many Libertarian candidates would support food bans. JMO
