Marietta College women's soccer routes Rio Grande 5-1
Lady Pioneers outshoot Lady Redwomen 37-5

Sept. 18, 2007
RIO GRANDE, Ohio â€â€￾ Marietta College senior Marianne Siders (Belle, W.Va./Riverside) and junior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) increased their season point totals to 10 Tuesday (Sept. 18) afternoon en route to leading the Lady Pioneers' women's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over host Rio Grande.

Caity White gave the Redwomen (3-5) a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Marietta (4-2), however, bombarded the opposing goalkeeper with 37 shots, 21 on goal, and scored five unanswered goals. Rio Grande managed just five shots, all on goal, in the loss.

Senior Kileen Lehman (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) tied the game at 1-1 in the 28th minute. Martinez and Siders worked the ball to Lehman, who found an opening in the upper right of the goal.

Sophomore Aly Endress (Lakewood) gave Marietta the lead for good in the 40th minute. The goal, assisted by freshman Jennifer George (Medina), was the first of her career.
Martinez went to work early in the second half, scoring goals in the 47th and 65th minutes. She increased her career total to 17 goals, which ranks third all-time. Lehman assisted the first goal with a cross, while Siders had a hand in the second.

Sophomore Rachel Powell (Rittman) capped the scoring in the 79th minute. Classmate Bridgette Bova (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Starpoint Central) began the play with a corner kick, which was deflected by a Rio Grande defender to a waiting Powell, who calmly fired it into the open goal. Like Endress, it was Powell's first career goal.

Freshman Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) tended all 90 minutes in goal for the third straight game and made four saves while improving to 3-0. Sarah Sandlin made 16 saves for the Redwomen.

Jeff -

You have every right to be very proud.
